According to the Christian Science Monitor, there was a Garmin recall of 1.25 million Nuvi GPS units this week. Approximately 796,000 of those units were sold in the United States. Those units that are recalled use batteries assembled by a third party manufacturer that could cause the units to overheat and possibly could catch on fire. However, it is important to note that only a few of the GPS units are affected by this recall. Only Nuvi units with model numbers 200W, 250W, 260W, 7xx and 7xxT - xx (xx may be a two digit number and may be followed by a letter).
If you are still concerned about your Garmin GPS unit, you can always check your specific model on the Garmin recall site. At the site, you can enter your unit's serial number and the site will tell you if the device is subject to the recall. Garmin advises that immediate action is required for this recall. If you don't have access to the internet, they recommend that you call (866) 957-1981 toll free in the United States with your unit's serial number to determine if your unit is affected.
If your unit is affected by the recall, then Garmin will replace the battery as well as the "insert spacer on top of battery" in your GPS unit. This remedy is supposed to decrease the chances of overheating.
While there have been no reported incidents of significant property damage or injuries due to the battery defect, Garmin instituted the recall out of caution. However, if you have been injured by a recalled item, you may want to meet with a Boston personal injury lawyer to talk about product liability. Product liability means that a manufacturer of a product can be held liable for placing a defective product into the hands of the consumer.
